Company secrets, client data and private information are things you do not want to end up in the hands of a hacker. Luckily there are precautions that you can take to safeguard your company and its network against hackers. When cyberattackers have you in their sights, you don’t want to be an easy target.

1. The Cloud

You want an easy-to-use remote file access solution that can help your team stay on top of their tasks while safeguarding company data, utilizing a cloud service can be very useful. Cloud storage gives you remote access, storage and a level of protection. It is the choice solution for many small businesses.

2. Education and Training

Giving your employees a solid foundation in data security and its importance is helpful. When everyone understands the company’s security policy it is easier to implement and gives you a little more security. Regular reviews or training at the time of hire are two ways to do this.

3. Automatic Software Updates

Older versions of software tend to have weaknesses that hackers can exploit, so keeping your software up to date is a considerable security measure. Companies typically have lots of software working behind the scenes, and that is why opting for automatic updates is such a help. The less time you have to devote to your software, the more time you have for more pressing orders of business.

4. Safeguard Passwords

Only certain individuals should have certain passwords. It is a good idea to have levels of security when it comes to remote access. Regularly changing passwords is another way to keep your network secure. Be sure to create strong passwords that consist of both letters and special characters, as they are more difficult to crack.

5. Secure the Wireless Network

Encrypting your wireless network is a good idea, but it is not as effective against cyber attacks as you might think. Strengthen your router by choosing the strongest encryption setting. It’s also a good idea to turn off your router’s broadcast function so that your wireless network becomes virtually invisible.

6. Limit Remote Access

Keeping as few files as necessary available for remote access is a wise decision. The less information that is available online, the better. Having dedicated secure servers to store and transfer data is a good idea. So, when you offer remote access, make sure you do so judiciously.

7. Hire a Specialist

One of the easiest ways to go about securing your company’s network is to hire someone else to do it. A data security specialist can assess your needs and provide solutions. This not only ensures that it is done correctly, but that you have exactly what you need to thwart any hacking attempts.

Regardless of your industry or the amount of data you need to protect, protecting your company’s network is paramount to the success and reputation of your business. Cyberthreats pose a major risk and cannot be ignored. So, don’t wait until your company is in the line of fire to do something.
