Mobile Number Portability has helped millions of people move to a better connection. Launched in 2010, the service is a big hit in the telecom industry. The accessibility to port your connection to a favorable operator without having to change mobile number is loved by customers.
TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority Of India) has issued new regulations for porting as the number of people wanting to move to a better mobile connection have increased considerably.
To know how mobile number portability has been improved by TRAI, keep reading this blog and stay updated with how porting is going to be super easy and quick because of the upcoming TRAI guidelines.
Rule #1: Mobile Number Portability Will Be Done In 2 Days
Yes! That’s true.
You will not have to wait for 7 long days to port your mobile number to a better connection provider.
New TRAI guidelines suggest that soon you will be able to port your number to any connection provider in just 2 days if you are porting in the same circle. In case of different circle porting, the rule suggests that it should be done within 4 days.
This rule will majorly help those who are willing to port their number to a different operator but can’t wait for 7 long days for it to be processed. Reduced time in porting will remove the unnecessary hassle of long porting process.
Thus, if you are porting your number to a new connection provider in the same city then your number will be ported in just 2 days. In case you are porting your number to a new connection of a different city then your number will be ported within 4 days.
Rule #2: Fine of Rs. 10,000 will be charged for wrong rejections
Fine on wrong rejections is another big step taken by TRAI in order to make the porting process user friendly.
Telecom operators are said to use false practices of wrongfully rejecting customer’s porting requests. The so called Retention Experts or Customer Care Executives hired by telcos transferred wrong information about porting to the customers which thus lead to porting rejections (as observed by TRAI).
In order to solve this, TRAI has imposed a fine of Rs. 10,000 on telecom operators if they are found using such wrong practices. Which means, if any telecom operator rejects an MNP request wrongfully, they will be liable to pay Rs. 10,000 as a fine.
“If any access provider or mobile number portability service provider contravenes the provisions… (it shall) be liable to pay an amount, by way of financial disincentive not exceeding Rs 10,000 for each wrongful rejection of the request for porting,” – TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India)
Rule #3: Reduced Validity time of Unique Porting Code
In order to initiate the MNP process, customers need to generate UPC (Unique Porting Code) that has to be shared with the operator that you wish to port to. At present, this code stays active for 15 days. This gives a lot of time to telcos for processing of porting requests.
As per the new TRAI guidelines, the validity of porting code will be reduced to 4 days across all LSA (Licensed Service Areas) except the LSAs of Jammu and Kashmir, Assam and North-East.
The effect of this change is expected to be faster processing of porting requests and better user experience.
Rule #4: Increase In Numbers Of Corporate Porting
At present, a single authorization letter can accommodate only 50 corporate numbers to be ported as per the TRAI guidelines. The new guideline suggests that after its implementation, a single authorization letter will be able to accomodate 100 corporate number porting.
Rule #5: Strict Evaluation of MNPSPs
TRAI will evaluate the quality of service parameters of all MNPSPs (Mobile Number Portability Service Providers) and Access Providers so as to improve customer satisfaction.
When will TRAI start implementing these changes?
As per Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, the changes for mobile number portability process are deferred to the first week of November. After successful implementation of these changes, MNP process is expected to be faster and better optimized. Also, a close evaluation on the MNP process will ensure better porting experience for the customers.
