Modern Events Calendar, a plugin formerly sold on CodeCanyon, with a superb start with over 4800+ sales and about 4.80-star rating on 181 reviews.
It has now 2 versions, a Lite and a Pro version. It’s been about a year that it has gone independent and Webnus has its own website and is selling it there, alongside its Lite version available on WordPress.org as well.
If you are on a tight budget, the free version is a great choice, since it has a wide range of functionalities as a free version. It offers most almost all the features a calendar needs to have.
As the names suggests, Modern Events Calendar’s most distinguishing feature is that it has a super modern looking right out of the box, and you probably do not need to change anything on its design.
Features coming in the Lite version:
Using the Lite version, you will have access to all the features you need for one-time and recurring events, and also you will be able to use tags, labels, locations, organizers and many more.
The front-end event submission is one of the features less seen in free versions of WP calendars, however, in Modern Events Calendar it is provided to the users for free, which is pretty generous. The Lite also allows you to create never ending events, all-day events and also multiple day events.
There are more than 4 different views for the calendar you can choose from:
- Full calendar or monthly calendar
- Daily/weekly view
- Countdown view
- List view
In the single event page, you can also display other events, organizers and a lot more in the sidebar, using the widgets.
The features in the Pro version:
If you go Pro then you will get a bunch of new features, including a map view by which you can show the location and the directions of the event. You will have full access to its advanced booking/ticketing system only in the Premium version of Modern Events Calendar. Lot of payment gateways have been made compatible with Modern Events Calendar. These include, PayPal, Stripe or pay locally and many more. Furthermore, for those who need other less popular gateways, MEC has become fully compatible with WooCommerce, so no worry, anything compatible with WooCommerce is also compatible with MEC.
Also, Webnus has released several new add-ons for Modern Events Calendar recently. It is only the Pro version on which these add-ons can run.
- A generous Lite version
- The premium version comes in 3 packages. They are only different in the number of websites that can be used on.
- For 1 site – $55
- For 5 sites – $199
- For 10 sites – $375
If you have been searching for an event calendar with all the functionalities a calendar can have, you have come to the right place.
This is why we are giving you a full review on an all-in-one WordPress event calendar called “Modern Events Calendar”
First Step with Modern Events Calendar
Right after you are done with installing and activating MEC, the home screen comes up with a video on the basics and a couple of FAQs which will give you a head start to work with MEC.
Create an Event
Add New Event menu is super user-friendly and easy to work with. Different sections of this menu are as follows:
- Event Title
Here you can choose a title for your Event.
- Event Description
In this section, the explanations or descriptions of the events are entered. For example, if your event is a course of fitness trainings then you can explain all about your procedures and how you are going to start and finish the course.
- Event Details
It is obvious from the name that all the details can be set in this section. These details are time, date and repeating of the events and more. For example, you can set a start and an end time and if you check the all-day event box then the event will playout all day and the options to set time will be hidden.
- Date & Time
- Start and End Time
- All day Event
- Hide Event
- Hide Event End Time
- Event Repeating
- Hourly Schedule
You Can set several hourly schedules and show what does your event include. It certainly includes several different activities which you can explain here.
Show the event’s location on the map, and also show its name and coordinations.
- Event Links
- Event Link (External Link)
- More Info
- Event Organizer
Introduce the organizer in details (Phone number, name, website, etc…).
- Event Cost
In the event edit page, a lot of other options are offered by Modern Events Calendar, of which some of them are, tags, labels, categories, and event color which you can change from the right-sidebar
To make using MEC a lot easier, some tooltips have been implemented in front of the tools which are a bit abstract and difficult to work with.
Enable Ticketing/Booking System
The booking system is only available in the Pro version, and to enable it you need to head over to MEC Settings > Modules and then check the box for Booking Module.
You need to save the settings once and then refresh the page, and after that a new meta box will be added in your Event Edit Page with the name “Booking”. Here you can edit all the options related to the booking/ticketing system. Most important of these options is the limiting of the tickets, by which you can set the limit for the tickets to be sold or let them be unlimited.
Displaying Your Events
To show your calendar on different pages and also in a wide range of views, based on your liking, you need to go to MEC Settings > Shortcodes. There you have full access (Pro version) to all of the views of Modern Events Calendar.
These views are the key factors in the modern design of Modern Events Calendar. These are the reason why you do not need to do any redesigning on MEC.
Another brilliant option, is that you can choose different views of the calendar for your different pages and different events. This way you can show your different events which have different categories, tags and etc., with any different view you like.
At the bottom you can see the Full Calendar View by which the visitors have access to all other views of the calendar as well, i.e. your visitors can see all the different events in any views they like here and search for the events and switch between all the views. This is a great option in terms of reachability, because you do not need to show your events in Monthly, Yearly, and etc. views so that your visitors can have access to all of them.
Here’s a look of the Masonry Gallery View:
The last but not least is the Single Event page, which you will be directed to after you click on an event. The single event page has a tremendous design which is also vastly customizable and also using the new Single Builder Add-on it is now more customizable than ever.
The 11 pre-built shortcodes of Modern Events Calendar Pro are as follows:
- Full calendar
- Slider view
- Countdown view
- Carousel view
- Upcoming events (grid)
- Upcoming events (list)
- Map view
- Daily view
- Weekly view
- Monthly view
- Masonry view
Using advanced shortcode builder, the users can also create their own customized shortcodes. This is another great option, which allows the users to adjust the shortcodes with their events.
Four new add-ons have been released recently for MEC. Elementor Shortcode Builder is one of these add-ons, and now you can customize your shortcodes using it easier than ever.
The scope of this review is never enough to cover all the options and features of Modern Events Calendar, but it is not honestly fair to finish this review without a dive into its gorgeous Booking System.
How Booking Process Works?
The functionality of the Booking System in both back-end and front-end, after it is enabled from MEC Settings, is as follows:
The Booking form will be added to the front-end where the visitors can see it only after they click on the register/purchase button. The form is vastly customizable, and it is more event customizable using the Elementor Form Builder.
After filling in the form, visitors can choose desired event and proceed to check out.
Here the visitors fill in the form with their own details (the details can be customized as well).
The payment method will be chosen here, and continue the purchase process.
An email notification will be sent to the customer and also an invoice will be generated which can be downloaded by the customer to let the customer now about the success of the purchase process. The WordPress admin can now manage the bookings from the booking menu under MEC dashboard. Also the confirmation and verification of the bookings can be managed, which can be enabled from MEC Settings.

Summary on Modern Events Calendar
Modern Events Calendar is really pioneer in a lot of areas, of which 3 of them are of great importance:

- It offers a vast number of features to customize and schedule the events.
- The Elementor compatibility and also the Elementor Add-ons added to this plugin, makes it a real pioneer in the area of WordPress event management plugins.
