Let we introduce you to freezers –

The appropriate machines that assist to store huge amounts of food in home are called Freezers. Primarily, there are 2 sorts of freezers –

  • Upright freezers
  • Chest freezers

Upright freezer are identical to compact freezers, whereas, chest freezers have the door on the top of the part. Earlier, freezers used to be defrosted by hands and this was really a slow procedure. In the past, removing of all the food had to be done earlier, freezer to be turned off, door to be opened and then ice started melting. Today, many freezers are self-defrosting and frost free.

Parts of self – defrosting freezer –

Let’s have a look at the parts of automatic self-defrosting freezer –

  • The timer
  • Heating coil
  • Temperature sensor or thermostat

The timer has 2 differences. One of the two operates like a clock and works uninterruptedly for 24 hours a day. The other one works at set timings, like, every 6 to 8 hours. The heating coil is twisted with the freezing coil in several types. There is a defrost heater that situates straightly below the freezing coils in different models. Both of the defrost heater and heating coil perform the same role, and that is, to melt the ice. Both of the heating appliances are really identical to the burners found on electric ranges. The thermostat recognizes the temperature inside the freezer and decides when it is time to turn off the heating appliance and terminate the defrosting procedure.

Working of frost-free freezer –

Now, let’s see how self-defrosting works –

In the freezer, there is always water vapor or moisture. This mostly occurs when you open the door of freezer. This moisture converts to ice and frost which develop up as the cold air blows. To get rid of the ice, self-defrosting freezers are the perfect way. The procedure of defrosting initiates when the timer turns off the cooling system and turns on the defrost heater. This happens after ever 6 to 8 hours. When the heating coil is on, it reheats and begins to melt all the ice in the freezer. It require only approximately 20 to 30 minutes to entirely melt all the ice build-up, as the heateries or heating coil are so near to the cooling oil. The temperature in the freezer increases as the ice melts. The thermostat recognizes that the freezer’s air is now above the 32o F freezing mark. Then, the thermostat shuts down the heating coil and the cooling system starts again. In different models, it is the timer that decides when the heating element is shut down and not the thermostat. All of the melted water drips into a drain that is connected to a tube that flows out all the water to a pan at the end of the freezer where it evaporates. It freezes the moisture and builds up ice, when the cooling system is back on. The defrosting procedure begins again in 6 to 8 hours.

In this way, a frost-free refrigerator works.
