A custom made patches might be just what your marketing strategy needs to help your business grow and thrive. Embroidered patches are very effective at getting your message across in a unique way and yet, they’re often underrated. To make the most out of your custom patches, however, you need to put some thought and effort into their design.
If you’re not the artistic type, worry not – GS-JJ’s creative team can help provide free artwork and design services upon request. If you want to design your own custom patches, we’ve compiled a list of the necessary steps:
Get in touch with us
First and foremost, to start the process of designing your custom made patch you need to get in touch with our creative team. Try to include as many details about the concept as you can – this includes things like height, and a rough idea of the quantity you will need and plan to order.
Common height sizes for embroidered patches include 3’’, 3.5’’ and 4’’ but the exact size will depend on your needs and how you plan to use the patches. It’s generally a good idea to come up with a concept before you get in touch with us: consider what you plan to use the patch for – promoting an event, marketing a product or your services, or for personal use. This will help us bring your idea to life.
Once you submit the beginning custom patch request, our creative team will send back to you with a price quotation within 24 hours.
Artwork and revisions
when we received you approved the quote, we will start working for your custom artwork. We deal with a high demand but our creative team will aim to provide you with a first draft within 4-5 days. Once you receive it, you can review it and provide feedback and revisions.
Some tips and guidance:
It’s always best to KISS: Keep It Simple Soldier. When it comes to custom patches, simplicity equals effectiveness. Don’t be tempted to put a little bit of everything on your patch – it may sound like a good idea in theory but in practice it may lower the quality of your patch and make it look overdone.
When it comes to colors, it’s good to have an idea of the color scheme you envision. As per the previous tip, it’s best to keep to a handful of colors rather than going overboard with the entire color circle. Choose colors that work well with each other and complement one another – if you struggle, our creative team can provide you with expert advice.
If you’re using text in your custom made patches, as a rule of thumb, try to make it at least 1/4th of an inch tall. If the text is smaller than that, it may become difficult to manipulate the stitches into certain numbers and letters (like “R” for example) which can affect the quality of your patch.
There are a couple of different options for borders – leather, merrow and head cut. Again, how you plan to use your patch will help determine the right option for you when designing your patch unit. As a rule of thumb, leather borders can be added to any type of patch, and a merrow border can be added to the edge of the leather border. Experiment during the concept stage or get in touch with our creative team for feedback or advice.
You will also need to determine how much if your patch would be embroidered. Generally, the amount of embroidery – whether it’s 50%, 75% or 100% – will depend on the image displayed. Very detailed images tend to require 90-100% embroidery coverage. For simple texts or a custom made patch with a name only, we can use 50% embroidery coverage. If your patch is something in between, we recommend going with 75% coverage.
- Place your order
Once you have finalized the artwork and all your revisions have gone through, we will prepare your invoice and provide payment instructions. The design of your custom made patches is nearly done!
Creating sample patch
Once we receive your payment, we will create the first sample of your patch. This process normally takes 4-5 business days – our creative team will follow your instructions to design a sample of your custom made patch and will email you a digital photo so you can review it. If something’s not quite right, we can still make final adjustments before we finalize the order.
