Gambling has been part of mankind since ancient times. Sometimes we do wonder how has gambling evolved till the present-day? What is the status of gambling? The answer to these questions may be found in the exploration of the newest forms of gaming and casinos. A major part of hospitality nowadays is the casino gaming. Many known corporations embark on these endeavors. It’s better to say that casino gaming is the major growth industry in the 90’s and is the only hospitality industry that is expanding.
Gambling is not new to the United States either. Various forms of gambling have been present in the country since it has been founded. For example, lottery tickets existed in Jamestown colony and helped the first settlement. Many years after, towards 1800, in New Orleans, the French and Spanish allowed gambling and by 1810 the city had so many gambling halls as the four largest American cities combined. By 1815, New Orleans licensed the gambling halls. In 1827, the Crescent City House was opened by John Davis, which it may be the first American gaming casino, a forerunner of the Nevada casinos.
The history of gambling is extensive in the United States, but legalized casino gambling has only existed since 1931 in Nevada and 1976 in New Jersey. Fast forward to 1993 there were 93 millions of visitors to casinos.
Casino development happened primarily in cities like Las Vegas and Reno in Nevada, and Atlantic City in New Jersey. However, Las Vegas remained the star of the casino in the United States with its eminent “Strip”.
People have been coming from all over the world just to visit the sparkling community. Las Vegas attracted tourists since 1931 and expanded quickly after the World War Two. In the 50’s, the city has become a tourist destination that combined casinos with entertainment and hotel accommodations. Las Vegas has become a developed business center and America’s fastest growing city.
The expansion of the legalized gaming in the entertainment culture has advanced to legalized gambling in almost every state of the United States. With the expanding of gambling and additional entertainment, there was a legal and moral duty to provide additional security for the customers that were drawn in. Modern-day casinos are securely regulated as in they are monitored by recording hundreds of real-time cameras, while the operators must distinguish rapid hand movements and card suits. Casinos use the most complex and demanding surveillance in the world, gaming operators need picture quality, a third-party system, video response in real-time, repetition of the systems and flexibility. Besides technological security, there is also personnel surveillance security.
The surveillance is happening through a patrol, by using security cameras to search, monitor, record routine and unusual activities that are happening in the casino. Because of this, the casino industry has an interest in establishing and protect identities with the use of biometrics. Casinos are the leaders in developments of facial recognition technology. Some people are able to manipulate the games, to combat that the casinos use facial biometric information, which is later shared with other casinos. The CCTV cameras are monitored and added images are used to provide a match of people that are not wished to gain entry. The cameras on the casino floor search for anyone who has matched data. The data is then run through a Griffin database to make an identification.
The technology went to Europe as well. The European casinos are in close contact with the American ones. The facial recognition technology is employed by all casinos. This led to a global database of players who enter the casinos and a database of unwanted players. There is an international network known as the Surveillance Information Network, which links over 140 casino surveillance rooms and protects their interests.
The Atlantic City has around 12 casinos and 3 of them use facial recognition system developed by MIT. The system recognizes specific facial features, which is then added to the national database and then it is transmitted to other databases around the world. Some casinos in London have also registered to a facial recognition system, which transmits live footage of players from their casinos to the headquarters of Anderson program in Las Vegas for identity investigation. But with the new laws of the European Union, involving GDPR, a legal ruling has been made, that without the knowledge of casino customers, casinos cannot use facial recognition. Same happened in Canada, in Ontario. Some casinos use hand readers in order to allow authorized staff to enter restricted areas.
Network Security and Web Access
Many companies have networks of security information which has to be maintained. Only the authorized users are able to access the information. With the Internet expanding at a higher rate, there is now a need to restrict access to sensitive data. The web services depend on the Internet Protocol service. Many online casinos, such as Admiral online casino, use a traditional method of authentication by using usernames and passwords. The biometric authentication eliminates the need of remembering passwords. The person registering needs to be physically present at the authentication time.
It is important to know that biometric data is encrypted before it is passed to the public network. Moreover, it is also important that all biometric templates of authorized users and securely stored. The emerging XML standards like WS-Security, XCBF, and SAML are helping biometrics and web services work together. These services provide improved and agreed on ways of sending data, which is encrypted, to the web services requests.
