Video gaming has come a long way from arcade games, and simple block games to artificial intelligence (AI) enabled gaming consoles in the present. A simple search on YouTube pops results in hundreds of people reviewing newly released video games. Serious gamers are no longer tagged as nerds but are actually considered influencers in their own right. This craze for video gaming has pushed the gaming industry to greater heights. This industry has also given a voice to numerous gaming enthusiasts, tech-savvy millennials and other digital artists aspiring to make a mark with their creativity, skills and unique thought process. If you consider the time spent on your gaming console as the best part of the day and your mind is abuzz with innovative gaming concepts, you can consider a career in game designing. Find out more about the scope of a career in this industry and interesting positions in the gaming industry in this blog.

What do game designers do?

Game designers can be considered as the architects of the games they create—they are involved in the planning of every element in the game. Also, there are a lot of career positions rolled into one—developers, content writers, producers, artists and animators. Hence, as a game designer, you should have a working knowledge of all these sub-domains.

Alongside the creative aspect, the job responsibility also extends to project management while adhering to strict timelines, maintaining high aesthetic appeal in interface, animation, sound and art style, integrating video design, technology and budget management.

What is the scope of the gaming industry?

It is time to debunk the myth once for all that there is a lack of options in the gaming industry. As per the American Gaming Association, there are around 62,000 new jobs in the industry every year.

  • Video game designers: This role gives you the creative satisfaction of executing your million-dollar idea for a game. This role involves creating a blueprint for the game that involves deciding the theme of the game, tentative rules, and the number of levels required and so on.
  • Video game artists: These are the real architects of your game. Their job is to work around the given characters and storyline and bring them to life with their drawings. Their imagination lays the foundation on which animators build the characters and the story landscape.
  • Game design writers: These days, video games are little novellas by themselves. All the characters have background stories; the levels have story plots and playing the game can feel like living the life of a written character. Game design writers are instrumental in creating these plot lines, character arcs and possible dialogues in the game.

The game designing industry is financially rewarding and allows you a platform to explore your creativity. It has also grown to become one of the biggest subsets of the entertainment industry. Join a B. Des. Game design course to become a part of this flourishing industry.
