During PAX East 2019, Gearbox Software announced their plans to make another entry into the popular looter-shooter franchise called Borderlands. Borderlands 3 news was rumored days before the event, however, the reveal of the actual game took everyone by surprise. Many gamers expected a game similar to what Gearbox Software did with Borderlands The Pre-Sequel in 2014 – but they were wrong.
Borderlands 3 is a new game in the series following the original open-world FPS formula that was set in the original Borderlands and its sequel Borderlands 2. However, some things will be different this time around. Here are all Borderlands 3 news revealed so far.
The story
According to various sources, Borderlands 3 will pick up a story seen in Borderlands 2. The events of the third game will begin way later in the timeline. However, to help tie things up, Gearbox Software recently released a new DLC called Commander Lilith & the Fight for Sanctuary. In the DLC, players fight alongside commander Lilith and find out about the new plot that we’ll be exploring in the Borderlands 3.
Sometime after Handsome Jack’s death, the new antagonists, Troy and Tyreen Calypso, learn about other Vaults on other planets and in order to gain possession of them, they form a new violent cult, called the Children of the Vault. The new game story will start at Pandora but is promised to spread out across multiple planets.
Game’s characters
Borderlands 3 news also brought a lot of familiar characters that will guide us in our upcoming adventure. Tiny Tina, Lilith, Hammerlock, Aurelia, Troy, Claptrap and many others will return to the new game. However, we’ll also get a bunch of new faces including 4 new Vault Hunters.
Players will be able to choose and experience the story of the new game as Amara, the new Siren character, Zane the Operative, FL4K the Beastmaster, and Moze the Soldier. As always, each of these new characters will feature 3 unique skill trees allowing players to shape them according to their playstyle.
The gameplay
As far as the gameplay concerns, Borderlands 3 looks very similar to its predecessors, only bigger and better. In Borderlands 3, you’ll be able to enjoy ridiculous and innovative mechanics featuring all-new Vault Hunter skills. However, the most iconic part of Borderlands gameplay is its guns. According to Borderlands 3 news, the new game will have over one billion guns.
In addition to the new-old features, Borderlands 3 will also include a new raiding system which will go hand in hand with new special events. From what we gather, Borderlands 3 will have live support that will dynamically change the game world when you reach the end game. Of course, this will come with a fresh progression system called Guardian Ranks, that will help players to unlock new skills and skins.
Other Borderlands 3 news
However, in addition to all the goodies and features for the new game, there were a few bits of information that went under the radar. One thing, in particular, enraged a huge audience of Borderlands fans – the fact that Borderlands 3 PC version will be sold exclusively on Epic Games Store wasn’t well received. We should mention that it’s only a timed-exclusive, so the game should be released on steam after the first six months.
Additionally, we should also mention that Borderlands 3 communication left a misleading message about the cross-platform play. Many gamers started to believe that Borderlands 3 will feature cross-platform multiplayer, however, Gearbox Software had to put a stop to these false rumors stating that the game won’t have cross-play at launch. Though, it might come a bit later…
Borderlands 3 will be released for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on September 13th.
